Chimney repointing for old and new homes

Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial part of a chimney: it weathers so the bricks do not. When the joints recess and crumble, rain soaks into the brickwork, frost pushes it apart, and the stack can become unstable.

We rake the joints out to a sound depth and repoint with a mortar suited to the brick, using lime-based mortar on older properties where a hard cement mix would trap moisture and damage the bricks.

What is the difference between repointing and rebuilding a chimney?

Repointing replaces the mortar joints and keeps the existing brickwork. A rebuild is only needed when the stack is leaning badly or the bricks themselves have failed.

Why use lime mortar?

Older, softer bricks need a mortar that lets moisture escape. Hard cement mortar traps water in the brick, which leads to spalling, so lime mortar protects period brickwork.
