Overview

Modern felt flat roofs

Today’s torch-on felt bears little resemblance to the thin roofing felt that gave flat roofs a bad name. Modern polyester-reinforced membranes are heat-bonded in layers, with a mineral cap sheet that protects the roof from sunlight and foot traffic.

It is a practical choice for extensions, garages and outbuildings where budget matters, and it can be patched and repaired easily later in its life.

How It Works

How our felt roof service works

  1. Step 1

    Inspect the deck

We check whether the deck is firm and dry or needs replacing.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare

Old felt is stripped or primed for overlay, and edges and upstands are prepared.

  3. Step 3

    Torch on the layers

Base and cap sheets are bonded in turn, with laps staggered.

  4. Step 4

    Finish & check

Trims and flashings are fixed, and the roof is checked before we leave.

FAQs

Felt roof FAQs

How long does a felt roof last?

A quality multi-layer torch-on felt roof commonly lasts 20 years or more, depending on the product, the falls and how much foot traffic it gets.

Can you felt over my existing flat roof?

Sometimes. If the existing felt is well bonded and the deck underneath is dry and sound, an overlay can work. If the deck is soft or wet, it needs stripping back first.

Is torch-on felting safe on a house?

It is, in trained hands. Installers follow hot-works precautions, such as keeping flame away from exposed timber details and checking the roof after torching finishes.

What colour can a felt roof be?

Cap sheets have a mineral finish, usually in grey, green or charcoal.
