Overview

Chimney repairs and repointing

Chimneys take more weather than any other part of the roof. Mortar joints erode, flashings lift, and water starts tracking into the loft or down the chimney breast. Because the stack is hard to see from the ground, damage is often well advanced before anyone notices.

We repoint chimney stacks and renew the lead flashings where the chimney meets the roof. Between them, those two jobs cure most chimney leaks and keep the stack stable.

FAQs

Chimney repair FAQs

How do I know if my chimney needs work?

Signs include crumbling mortar, plants growing from the stack, a leaning chimney, damp patches on the chimney breast and lifted lead where the stack meets the roof.

Do I need scaffolding for chimney work?

In almost every case, yes. Safe access around the whole stack needs scaffold, and it is included in your quote.

Why is there damp on my chimney breast?

Often it is water getting in through eroded mortar, failed flashings or an uncapped pot. Some damp comes from condensation in unused flues. We check the outside of the stack first.

How often does a chimney need repointing?

Mortar on an exposed stack commonly lasts 20 to 30 years or more, depending on exposure and the original mix. Regular checks catch erosion before bricks work loose.
