Overview

Natural and man-made slate roofs

Slate gives a roof a clean, flat line and, in natural stone, a lifespan measured in generations. Many older homes around Northampton were built with Welsh slate, and keeping that character matters when the roof is renewed.

We lay natural slate, fibre cement slate and slate-effect tiles, each fixed to the correct gauge so the roof stays tight in high winds. We check the lead flashings and chimney abutments on every job too, as these are where slate roofs usually let water in first.

Pricing

What affects slate roof prices?

Every roof is different, so every quote is written for your property. These are the factors that move the price most.

Natural or man-made

Natural slate costs more than fibre cement or slate-effect tiles.

Slate size and gauge

Smaller slates and tighter gauges need more slates and more fixing time.

Reusing salvaged slate

Relaying sound slates saves material but adds sorting time.

Chimneys and leadwork

Every chimney, dormer and valley adds lead and detailing.

FAQs

Slate roof FAQs

Is natural slate worth the extra cost?

Quality natural slate can outlast several tiled roofs, which evens out the cost over time. For a budget closer to concrete tiles, fibre cement slate gives a similar look.

Can you reuse the slates already on my roof?

Sound slates can often be stripped, sorted and relaid, topped up with matching reclaimed slate. Cracked or delaminating slates are replaced.

Why are slates slipping on my roof?

Usually the nails have corroded, a problem known as nail fatigue. Once it spreads across the roof, re-slating with new fixings is more economical than refixing slates one at a time.
