Overview

Dry verge and hip fitting

Verges are the sloping edges at the gable ends of a roof, and hips are the angled ridges where two slopes meet. Both have traditionally been sealed with mortar, and both take the full force of the wind.

Dry verge caps interlock along the gable edge and fix into the battens, while a dry hip system screws each hip tile in place over a breathable seal. Our gallery includes a slate-effect roof finished with a dry hip.

FAQs

Dry verge and hip FAQs

Why is mortar falling from my roof edge?

Verge mortar cracks with age and weather, then drops out in pieces. It leaves the edge tiles loose, and falling mortar is a hazard near doors and paths. Dry verge replaces it for good.

Do dry verge caps suit every tile?

Most modern interlocking tiles have compatible systems, and universal options cover many others. We check your tile profile before quoting.

What is a hip iron?

A galvanised steel bracket at the bottom of a hip that supports the first hip tile and stops the line of tiles sliding down.

Can I have dry verge without dry ridge?

Yes, they can be fitted separately, though many homeowners do both at once to save on access costs.
